Flip…Flip…Flipadelphia. Over the course of about an hour, two former Providence Friar commits announced their intentions to follow Coach Cooley to Georgetown, essentially flipping from a Friar to a Hoya. The first to announce his commitment to Georgetown was 4 star stretch four Drew Fielder, one of the trio of initial Providence Friar commits from Southern California Academy (Garwey Dual and Donovan Santoro the two others).
Fielder is currently ranked just outside the Top-100 in the class of 2023 but I believe once you get past the Top-50, the next 100 ranked players are pretty interchangeable in my mind. Fielder plays the new age version of a power forward, much like Noah Horchler previously played for Providence. He doesn’t appear to be as strong of a rebounder as Horchler but his ability to put the ball on the floor is at a much higher level at this point.
The next player to flip over to the Hoyas was class of 2024 guard, Kayvaun Mulready. I’m actually more bummed about this one, even though he’s another year away from college ball, because he looks like he’s going to basically be Devin Carter 2.0 with his ability to defend and explosiveness to get to the rim.
Both players cited their relationship with Coach Cooley as the main deciding factor in hopping from Providence over to Georgetown, which puts a little salt in the wound but is completely understandable as they don’t have any connection with PC yet, just the coaches that have been recruiting them.
I wish both of them all the luck, except for when they play the Friars. I’m assuming that some fans are going to direct some of their disdain for Coach Cooley on these two young men, which is unfair and unfortunate for them, but is probably unavoidable. They will be connected with Cooley’s departure from Providence, as least tangentially.
