The Friars have been making the cut for a number of 2021 targets these days and we can officially add 2021 Forward Rafael Castro to the list.
Bryce Hopkins, Kuluel Mading, Legend Geeter, Darius Johnson, & Breon Pass all currently have Providence included in their final list of schools at the moment. It’s only a matter of time before the first domino falls and and the 2021 recruiting class starts coming together for Cooley and the Friars.
Castro’s final six schools other than PC include Dayton, Miami, George Mason, VCU, & Seton Hall. The 6’10” slim forward from Dover, NJ has length on top of length. Unlike the majority of young ballers with his size, Castro has high-level mobility and lateral quickness. Most of the time, it takes a year or two for the coordination to catch up to the growth spurt of these young guys but Rafael’s maneuverability makes him a versatile big with a ton of upside to his skills.
With his Marcus Camby-like body-type, he excels at shot-blocking and is able to swat anything within reach that even comes within the general vicinity of the basket. The way he wants to run the floor reminds me of Kalif Young but the way he is able to gather lobs and finish alley-oops in transition reminds me of (and it pains me a little bit to say this but…) Paschal Chukwu.
Castro’s athleticism gives him the positional versatility that Ed Cooley’s teams harness and thrive on. It’s a little tough to find highlights of the big man but the glimpses look enticing.
