Kyron Cartwright Named to NBC Sports’ College Basketball Under The Radar Stars

NBC Sports keeps coming out with Pre-Season list after Pre-Season list and I’m going to keep eating them up until the College Basketball season starts.  The latest list is for the Under The Radar Starts You Need To Know, and wouldn’t you know it, Providence’s own Kyron Cartwright pops up among the 10 names.

Here’s what they had to say about Cartwright:

“Cartwright receives ample respect within the Big East, which is to be expected considering the fact that he was named the league’s Most Improved Player last season. As a junior Cartwright averaged 11.4 points, 6.7 assists (tops in the Big East) and 3.5 rebounds per game. Look for this to be the season in which Cartwright becomes a household name nationally, as he leads a program aiming not only for its fifth consecutive NCAA tournament berth but a Big East title as well.”

For those of us in Friartown, we are well aware of just how awesome Kyron is. With the Friars poised to take a legitimate shot at Villanova for Big East supremacy this year, the rest of the country is going to become very familiar with the straw that stirs the Friar drink.

Kyron currently sits at 13th in total assists in Friars history with 439.  If he matches last season’s total of 222, he’ll finish his career at PC with 661 and would finish one assist behind Ernie D, good for 3rd on the Friars all-time list.  I expect him to tally at least percentage points better than last year with everyone returning for this season, so at worst, I think he finished as 2nd all-time in assists at Providence College.  Say Kyron plays 32 games again this season, he would need to average 8.9 assists per game to overtake Vinny Council for the all-time assist crown.  I can’t see Cartwright getting up to almost 9 assists per game this year, but if he gets an extra game or two in the Big East and NCAA Tournament, he would only need to average about 8.2 assists per game to get to number 1…so I think he has an outside chance of actually doing it.

And now, for Friarbasketball.com’s Junior Year Highlights for the those unacquainted to get acquainted.
