Garwey Dual Invited to G-League Elite Camp

Following his decision to declare for the 2024 NBA Draft after his Freshman season, former Providence College guard Garwey Dual has been invited to Chicago to participate in the G-League Elite Camp, starting on May 11th.

Dual is one of 44 invitees who will be taking part in two days of scrimmages and may even be promoted to the larger combine that immediately comes after the G-League Elite Camp. The camp is an opportunity for NBA hopefuls who are projected to go either late in the 2nd round or undrafted to show off their skills and abilities on a grander stage that could translate into even more opportunities.

Here is the list of players who have been invited to participate this season. Included are some familiar Big East names, Mark Armstrong (Villanova) & AJ Storr (Wisconsin via St. John’s).

Dual faced an uphill battle at Providence to live up to some insanely high expectations following The Athletic’s NBA/NBA Draft writer Sam Vecenie projecting him as a Top-10 pick in the NBA Draft before he even touched a college basketball court. Dual showed a ton of potential at Southern California Academy but had still only been playing significant minutes against high-level competition for a short period of time and was going to need some time to develop additional skills to go along with his first class defense.

Dual’s season averages don’t jump off the page having averaged 3.3 ppg, 1.9 apg, 1.3 rpg, 0.8 spg, & 0.7 bpg. Dual shot just 33.1% from the field and 25.0% from three. He’s not an off-the-dribble shooter and although he possesses great ball-handling prowess, he consistently seemed very hesitant to commit to taking the ball to the paint. He would continually have a half-step on his defender on a drive before pulling it back out and re-setting back at the three-point line. His game flourishes when he gets to utilize his playmaking ability and if he were to have put himself into the lane more often and let his instincts take over, I think it would have served him well…and also opened up some easier jump shooting opportunities as a nice bonus. I also think that Kim English and the staff would have been alright with letting him work through some mistakes that may have popped up in trying to be aggressive, even overly so.

I believe that Dual could greatly benefit from getting an opportunity in the G-League to mold himself to the NBA game. His length, athleticism, and defense aren’t going anywhere, he just needs to hone some additional attributes in order to potentially become a contributor at the highest level.
