The 2025 NBA G League Draft was held yesterday and the Stockton Kings selected former Friar Jabri Abdur-Rahim with the 29th pick of the first round.
Jabri Abdur-Rahim suited up for the Sacramento Kings during Summer League, so it only makes sense that the team most familiar with his game, the Kings G League affiliate, the Stockton Kings, scooped him up in this year’s G League Draft. The defending G League champs know what they’re getting, and Jabri’s already shared the floor with some of the squad during the summer, which should make for a smooth transition.
Before this next chapter, Abdur-Rahim’s college journey took a few turns. He started out at Virginia, then spent three seasons at Georgia before landing in Friartown for his grad year. Just as he was finding his rhythm with Providence, a tough knee injury cut his season short. But right before that setback, Jabri gave everyone a glimpse of what he can do as he torched #15-ranked St. John’s at Madison Square Garden with a ridiculous 27-point performance on 8-for-11 from deep, plus 7 boards, 2 assists, and zero turnovers.
Okay, quick rant before we get into it. I just need NBC to know that I cannot stand the music they use on their game highlights. Why do we need the background beats when the actual commentary exists? Hearing the crowd, the play-by-play, and the real energy of the moment is what makes highlights worth watching. The music just kills the vibe every time.
Anyway, back to Jabri. Before the injury, he was absolutely dialed in. Over his last four games, Abdur-Rahim went 15-for-22 from three (68.2%!!) officially establishing himself as one of Providence’s go-to shooters and earning an important spot in their rotation.
Also, somehow I just learned that Jabri’s dad, Shareef Abdur-Rahim, is the president of the NBA G League. No clue how that slipped past me, but I guess I haven’t been keeping tabs on the G League front office. Still, that’s a pretty cool full-circle moment…dad running the league, son getting ready to make his mark in it.
Wishing Jabri the best this season. As for the Sacramento Kings… I honestly have no idea what direction they’re headed. Their roster looks like it was built in 2002. There’s bunch of vets, a few mismatched pieces, every player needs the ball in their hands in order to be effective and each with limited shooting ability…makes it feel like they might end up being big sellers near the trade deadline.
If that happens, maybe we’ll see a little Devin Carter and Jabri Abdur-Rahim action to close out the year. That’s the hopeful version of me talking, but I’m choosing optimism.
