Matt Palumbo Promoted to Assistant Coach for the Providence Friars

Kim English has promoted Special Assistant to the Head Coach, Matt Palumbo, to an Assistant Coach for the Providence Friars. Palumbo’s previous team contributions included scouting, practice, workouts, analytics, video, report preparation, game strategy, and player development.

If, like me, you witnessed the player development of Devin Carter into a first round NBA Draft pick, and Matt Palumbo had any hand in that elevation of Carter’s skills, then this may be the most deserved promotion I’ve ever seen in college athletics. Literally every aspect of Carter’s game improved and many of them drastically. If Carter’s three-point shooting had not improved to the level it did, I doubt he gets drafted with that selection by the Sacramento Kings.

Palumbo followed English from George Mason to Providence, having worked under English as a Graduate Assistant during his two years as the head coach of the Patriots. Prior to being a Graduate Assistant at George Mason, Palumbo was an undergraduate manager for Tony Bennett during his four years at the University of Virginia. Palumbo also has worked with USA Basketball as a member of their support staff.  He assisted with the Junior National Team in the summer and fall of 2019.

It only makes sense that English spreads the love around after re-upping with Providence after one year as the team’s Head Coach. Palumbo has the looks and feel of a guy who is going to climb the coaching ranks quickly and find himself as a Head Coach himself before he knows it.

“Matt is very deserving of this promotion. H is one of the most dedicated and driven individuals I have worked with during my whole career. We are fortunate to have him working with our team. He has all the intangibles to be a successful head coach someday.” – Kim English
