With the 13th pick in the first round of the 2024 NBA Draft, the Sacramento Kings select…Devin Carter, from Providence College.
For the first time in 8 years, the Providence College Friars had a player selected in the NBA Draft. The last year that saw some Friars selected was in 2016 when Kris Dunn went 5th overall to the Minnesota Timberwolves and Ben Bentil went 51st overall to the Boston Celtics. There are a ton of different topics to touch on from Devin Carter’s monumental night, so let’s get right into it.
First off, let’s get into Carter’s reaction from being selected, to being called by Coach Mike Brown, and then by owner Vivek Ranadivé.
And my personal favorite…
Then there was the reaction from teammates, coaches, analysts, and media from around basketball.
Then there’s that Florida boy fit that Carter was rockin’ at the Draft.
And because he needed to match that drip from Carter, Kim English in the pinstripes looking like a Mafia Don alongside DC.

Kim is just a total freaking stud.

Not to mention Carter’s own sick logo with the DC22 (via YuckTruck) being available soon and also helping out the Friar Family NIL.
And officially updated for Carter’s move to the Kings in fluid fashion…
The response from Sacramento Kings fans and media about the overwhelming love from Friartown for Devin Carter is what sets us apart #pcbb and #pcbc from the rest.
This one is easily the best response ever and if you’re even a little bit familiar with #pcbc then you already knew this was coming with the way that this dude responded to the Kings selecting Devin Carter. He was more referring to his complaints about roster construction with there being so many guards but it is a little odd to be doing that before Free Agency has even started. Obviously the Draft isn’t going to be the only time there are going to be changes in the roster before the next season starts, and Friartown was not hearing it.
I mean, all he had to do was wait 1 singl day and the Kings were already making moves to clear some room for Carter’s path to playing time and open up other options for when free agency starts.
Davion Mitchell has a very similar game to Devin Carter being an absolute pest on the defensive end and always playing as hard as possible. Carter is much more of a two-way threat than Mitchell as Mitchell’s game was 80/20 towards his defensive impact. The trade also has Sacramento giving up two 2nd round picks to the Raptors, which on its face, seems like a completely lopsided deal in favor of Toronto. BUT…the deal also opens up an additional roster spot on the Kings and gets them under the luxury tax by $7M, while also putting them $15M under the first apron (which is super important with the new monetary implications involved). The Sacramento Bee spells it out much better than I could here:
“The salary cap for the 2024-25 season is projected at $141 million with the first luxury tax apron set at $178.7 million and the second apron at $189.5 million. According to Spotrac, the Kings have $159.3 million in active cap allocations and $16.4 million in cap holds. That puts them $34.7 million over the salary cap, but they are $15.7 million below the first luxury tax apron and $26.5 million below the second apron. The Kings were projected to go over the luxury tax threshold after Malik Monk agreed to a new four-year, $78 million contract, but the Toronto trade helped them get under the tax line. That gives Sacramento access to the full $12.9 million non-taxpayer mid-level exception in addition to the $4.7 million bi-annual exception.”
There are going to be a couple more moves to be made by the Kings front office before all is said and done so it’s a bit premature to project how the lineup will look at the beginning of next season. There are some good players whose names are floating around for free agency who would be intriguing options for Sacramento but they better get to work quickly because teams are already making moves.
The 2024 NBA Draft was a big night for Devin Carter and the Big East as a conference as they had 8 players selected, the most from the conference since 2012 (but yet only 3 teams made the NCAA Tournament, commence eye roll here).

The Kings got a great one in Devin Carter. Now let’s Light The Beam!
