Providence Friars 84 (14-6)
Georgetown Hoyas 76 (8-12)

Just kidding. He acted like an arrogant and pompous egomaniac with his post game comments after falling apart down the stretch to the greatness that is Devin Carter. Always talking out of both sides of his mouth, he …He leads off with wanting to talk about the elephant in the room and then never addresses they shitty way he left Providence. On the contrary, he takes all the credit and none of the blame. Providence was nothing before he got there and he left them in a better position than any other basketball team in the country who has a first year coach.
Who the hell is he talking about not having the “COURAGE” to change like he did? Dude, you’re a college basketball coach who went to a job in the Nation’s capital to make $6 million a year. You’re so brave. But this is the comment that really pissed me off is how he should get a bonus check from Providence College for the atmosphere from the game. Take a gander at the stark difference between the post game comments from Kim English compared to Ed Cooley.
I can’t quite put my finger on the difference…
I really didn’t understand the statement that Providence was brave enough to hire a black coach (Cooley) and then follow that by hiring another black coach (English). Especially following this one about him leaving Providence.
It feels like he is trying to take a shot at PC for never having a black coach before hiring him or something, it’s just so out of nowhere. Let’s take a look at the last two coaches for each team in the Big East and you’ll notice that the entire conference has no problem with hiring the best coach for their job, no matter their skin color.
Butler – Thad Matta, Lavall Jordan
UConn – Dan Hurley, Kevin Ollie
Creighton – Greg McDermott, Dana Altman
DePaul – Tony Stubblefield, Dave Leitao
Georgetown – Ed Cooley, Partick Ewing, John Thompson III (so we don’t count Cooley twice)
Marquette – Shaka Smart, Steve Wojciechowski
Providence – Kim English, Ed Cooley
St. John’s – Rick Pitino, Mike Anderson
Seton Hall – Shaheen Holloway, Kevin Willard
Villanova – Kyle Neptune, Jay Wright
Xavier – Sean Miller, Travis Steele
Creighton and Xavier are literally the only two teams in the 11-team Big East to not have a minority coach as one of their last two coaches of their men’s basketball team. Half of the coaches (12 of 24) are minorities and there are a TON of great coaches listed, regardless of their respective race.
Here’s his whole spiel if you are so inclined to listen to it.
Now that the fraud has been covered at length, we can get to the real star of the show, Devin Carter.
Game Notes:
- Scoring 11 of his game-high 29 points in the final two minutes, Devin Carter showed the growth he’s made as both a player and leader for the Friars, putting the team on his back while making some incredible plays.
- Carter hit shots from every level, driving to the basketball, using some stellar footwork in the paint, and connecting on clutch shots from deep. He shot 10/14 from the floor, 2/5 from three, and 7/9 from the free throw line, helping secure the victory from the stripe in the final stretch.
- Carter also added 4 rebounds and 2 assists but showed off his calling card on the defensive end with 4 steals and 2 blocks over a team-high 38 minutes on the floor.
- Carter’s 29 points were his second highest point total on the season (31 at St. John’s) and he has now scored in double-digits in 20 of 20 games this season. Four of his baskets came by way of the dunk, each one more spectacular than the last.
- But it was the windmill to put the nail in the coffin as time ran out that was the show stopper of the evening.
- Josh Oduro kind of quietly had an awesome game. Shooting 8/10 from the floor and hitting on 6/7 from the line, Oduro finished the game with 22 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals, and assist, and a block.
- Oduro continues to be money from the line, hitting at a career-high 81.1% clip and coming up huge during the current three-game win streak by connecting on 17/18 free throws.
- Over those three games, Oduro is averaging 18.3 ppg, 7.7 rpg, 1.7 apg, 2.3 bpg, & 1.0 spg. He’s put up these numbers while shooting 73.1% from the floor (19/26).
- Ticket Gaines didn’t have to have his typical explosive game from three in order to make a big impact offensively throughout the game. While the Georgetown defense shaded toward Gaines when he set up in the corners, he took advantage by doing other things to help the team win. Gaines shot 3/4 on 2-point field goals and handed out a team-high 4 assists.
- Gaines has hit a three-point basket in 10 of the last 11 games, shooting 36.8% (25/68) from deep over that span. I’d love for him to settle into that middle ground type of consistency rather than being an all-or-nothing shooter as he hit 5 threes in 3 of those 11 games but 1 or 0 threes in 5 of those games as well.
- If you just looked at the box score after the game, you would think that Corey Floyd Jr. may not have had that much of an impact on the game, but you’d be wrong. Despite only taking two shots and making one (AND A THREE AT THAT!), Floyd effected the game with his intensity and effort resulting in 5 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 assists, while playing excellent defense.
- Floyd has made 6 three-pointers on the season, one in six different games this season, but there’s going to be a game soon where he’s feeling himself and getting his confidence back. I just know it. This alley-oop to Carter was just ridiculous too.
- Jayden Pierre didn’t have his most impressive game offensively, but he was solid running the point with 9 points and 3 assists.
- On the other side of things, he did turn the ball over 4 times and went 0/3 from three.
- Garwey Dual played the one in relief of the bench and although I love Dual’s handles, he needs to finish off his drives after that quick first step. He has the length and dexterity to finish around the rim but he continually dribbles with no intent to attack his defender.
- Rafael Castro played one of his better games as of late even in just 7 minutes of action. Castro had an empathic dunk, went a perfect 2/2 from the line, and added a block. Those are the things that the Friars need from Castro.
- Richard Barron had his old hair back and immediately hits a three…coincidence?
- Jayden Epps can make some damn good plays with the ball, he just shoots it so damn much. Yeah, he had 26 points, but he needed 27 shots to get there. Yeah, he had 6 assists, but he also had 5 turnovers. Granted, he probably just needs some players around him where he doesn’t feel pressured to carry the entire offensive load for the team, but as far as this year’s Hoya team goes, there’s going to be a lot of nights with Epps shooting 9/27 from the floor.
- Supreme Cook was actually really solid down low, helped by the fact that he got away with a couple of travels.
- That was the best game that I’ve seen Kansas State transfer Ismael Massoud play this season. He finished with 16 points, including 4/8 from three and 7 rebounds. He was really the player that kept them in this game.
- I’m really curious to see if Drew Fielder stays at Georgetown after this year. He played a season low five minutes in this game and I have a feeling that Cooley is going to hit the transfer portal for some bigs with Cook gone after this season. His game and skill set are much better suited for Kim English’s offense than Ed Cooley’s.
- For the post game pic, I’m going with Rich, for both the kicks and the return of the hair.
