Julian Gressel Signs with Inter Miami Following A 2nd MLS Cup

Julian Gressel has officially signed with Inter Miami following his second MLS Cup Championship. Gressel was originally drafted by Atlanta United with the 8th overall pick in the 2017 MLS Superdraft after a stellar collegiate career at Providence College. Gressel made an immediate impact with Atlanta, winning the 2017 MLS Rookie of the Year before helping the team win the 2018 MLS Cup in his second year in the league. Gressel continued to be an elite distributor in 2019, tallying 12 assists before being acquired by DC United in 2020 when Atlanta couldn’t afford to sign him to an extension. Julian continued to assist at a high level, finishing with 13 assists in 2021, good for third in the entire MLS.

In 2022, Gressel was traded to the Vancouver Whitecaps before being acquired by the Columbus Crew a year later. Gressel had requested that he be moved to Columbus to be closer to his family and he must’ve felt extra comfortable once he got there because he helped the Crew win their 3rd ever MLS Cup Championship and 2nd in the last 4 years.

Following his 2nd MLS Cup victory, Gressel became a sought after free agent and on January 9th, singed with Inter Miami on a three year deal with an option for a fourth. I know you’ve heard all about Inter Miami lately with their singing heard ’round the world last year of soccer legend Lionel Messi. The signing reunites Gressel with head coach Tata Martino, who was his coach during his 2018 MLS Cup 2018 with Atlanta United.

Gressel joins some big names in International soccer at Inter Miami including Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, DeAndre Yeldon, and newly signed, former Messi temmate, Luis Suarez.

Inter Miami has yet to have a winning season since joining the MLS in 2020 but I have a really good feeling that is going to be changing this upcoming season with the additions they’ve made and a full season with Messi.

Julian Gressel is going to have a lot of eyes on every game he plays and will have plenty of options to pass to this upcoming season. All of those things should bode well for his Team USA aspirations in the future as well.
