Happenings Around Friartown: Daquan Davis De-Commits, Bryce Hopkins Watchlists, & More

1. Daquan Davis De-Commits from Providence

In an unexpected turn of events, the Friars top-ranked commit from their 2024 class, Daquan Davis, has de-committed from Providence.

Davis will be playing this upcoming season with Overtime Elite and despite being ranked just outside the Top-100 in the 2024 class at the moment, there is no way in hell that he’s going to be on the outside looking in when those rankings are all said and done.

Before announcing his de-commitment, Davis was one of the most vocal, gung-ho advocates for Providence College since the likes of Nate Watson. Even just days before his announcement, he was re-tweeting his highlight videos mentioning that he was a Providence commitment and hollering at other dudes Kim English and his staff were recruiting to try and persuade them to come to Friartown as well. If this season goes great for English and the Friars make a deep run in the tournament, I’m still holding out a small percentage of hope that Davis could re-commit to the Friars. Especially because I LOVE the dog in this kid.

2. Bryce Hopkins Named to Multiple Watchlists

Junior Bryce Hopkins was named to the 20 player watchlist for the 2024 Karl Malone Award for the best power forward in college basketball.

I know Karl Malone was a great basketball player but we seriously couldn’t find someone who was less of a scumbag to name the best power forward award after? I mean, Tim Duncan is right there.

A couple of other Big East guys were named to the Top-20 list including Marquette’s Oso Ighodaro and UConn’s Alex Karaban. Last year, Hopkins made it to the final 10 list and final 5 list for the award before losing out to the eventual winner, Indiana’s Trayce Jackson-Davis.

Hopkins was also named as one of 20 players named to the NABC Division I Player of the Year Preseason Watchlist.

The Big East makes up 25% of the list with 5 players claiming a spot on the Top-20 watchlist, including Hopkins. Villanova’s Justin Moore, UConn’s Donovan Clingan, & Creighton’s Trey Alexander and Ryan Kalkbrenner were also included on the Pre-Season list.

Last but not least, Hopkins was also named as a Third Team All-American selection by CBS Sports.

3. David Duke Jr. Lands with 76ers G-League Affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats

After being cut by the 76ers after initially singing a Exhibit 10 contract, David Duke Jr. has signed on with the 76ers G-League affiliate club, the Delaware Blue Coats. The team recently announced their training camp roster that includes a couple of two-way players and a host of recognizable basketball names hoping to make their way to the league.

Duke absolutely has the talent to be on an NBA roster, he just needs to tighten things up on his shooting percentages to be a consistent threat from the outside.

4. Providence College Men’s Hockey Climbing the Rankings

The rankings for college hockey come out every Monday, but I’m going to be too focused on the first basketball game of the season to give the Men’s Hockey Team their necessary props. PC Hockey is currently ranked #7 in the country (even receiving 2 first place votes) and are having a hell of a start to the season, already beating #4 Michigan, #2 Denver, & #15 New Hampshire en route to a 6-1-2 record.

With Michigan losing a pair of games at Wisconsin this weekend, the Friars should jump them in the upcoming rankings come tomorrow.

5. Men’s Soccer Advances to Big East Tournament Semi-Finals

With a 3-0 win over Creighton in the Big East Tournament Quarters, the Providence Men’s Soccer Team has advanced to the Semis in which they will take on Xavier on Thursday, November 9th at 4 PM.

The other side of the bracket will see Georgetown play UConn for their respective spot on the finals. The Friars are currently projected to be in the NCAA Tournament field so this will not be the last time we’re checking in on our mates on the pitch.
