Kim English and his team continue to crush the recruiting scene in the DMV area, something that wasn’t supposed to happen once Ed Cooley took over the job at Georgetown, with Hoya fans declaring immediate ownership over every prospect coming out the recruiting grounds there. In that case, nobody should tell them that Davis was just named the 2022-2023 MaxPreps Washington D.C. Player of the Year. Where is Georgetown located again?
Daquan Davis is the 2022-23 MaxPreps Washington D.C. High School Basketball Player of the Year 🏀
Davis led the St. John’s Cadets to a 30-3 record, the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference tournament title and a national top 10 ranking. Davis finished the WCAC title game with a game-high 21 points, seven rebounds and three assists along with the game-winning basket to secure his team The Chip. That first step is LETHAL.
The versatile guard averaged 16.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.6 steals while shooting 42.3 percent from the field this past season. Just as a reminder…this was for his Junior season. Kid is not even a Senior yet. Davis was named as an Honorable Mention to the MaxPreps Junior All-American Team for his tremendous season for St. John’s.
Prior to transferring to St. John’s, Davis played his High School ball at nearby St. Frances Academy in Baltimore. Three players from last year’s team at St. Frances will be playing their Freshman seasons on Power 6 basketball teams next year, including Carlton Carrington (Pittsburgh), Jahnathan Lamothe (Maryland), & Bryce Lindsay (Texas A&M). Just a fun little side note, recent NCAAW Champion from LSU, Angel Reese, is an alumni for St. Frances as well.
Davis chose the Friars over Maryland, Mississippi State, & Notre Dame. Maryland had previously been the expected to be the potential destination being the local recruiter, as well as the first school to offer him back in June of 2022 (almost a full year before PC), but Kim English apparently had other things in mind. Kim English became the new Head Coach of the Providence Friars on March 23rd. The Friars offered Davis on March 26th.
Davis took an official visit to Providence in May and committed to the PC in June. I’m absolutely loving this timeline of events.
What jumps out about Davis is his quickness and ferocity in attacking on offense. From all accounts of those who have coached and watched him play in person, the intangibles really stand out. His toughness, leadership, grit, and want to win are what set him from players with similar attributes and those are things that are going to play at any level.
He’s got that fucking fire in him and you CAN’T! TEACH! THAT!
“Coach Kim is a great guy. Great staff. Great fans. I felt like it was home.”

Kevin Farrahar did a much better job than me taking an in-depth look at Davis’ basketball path up until he committed to Kim English and the Friars, so I’d encourage everyone to check out Friar Basketball’s article here.
